REC 17 M 21
GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 1st February, 1921.

My Lord,
120
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of
Your Lordship's despatch No.325 of the 23rd September, 1920, with regard to the claim of Andreas Johnsen of Aabenraa, Slesvig, for compensation for his interment by this Government in 1914.

2.
Enquiries have been made which show that this man was a patient in the Peak Hospital (a private hospital) from 15th
to 20th July, 1913, under the care of Dr. Muller, a German
doctor, and that on this occasion he gave his address as "S. S.
'Kattie', Jebsen & Co.". He was again admitted on 2nd August,
1914, and discharged on 21st August, this time as a patient of Dr. Hoch, another German doctor. No other details are on record concerning him. The statement in the enclosure to Your Lordship's despatch that he was interned on 26th October, 1914, "while lying ill in a hospital in Hongkong" does not therefore appear to be
correct.
3.
The records in possession of the Military Authorities in Hongkong merely show that Johnsen was arrested on the 26th October, 1914, and was subsequently sent to Australie; but they throw no light on the circumstances of his arrest, and there is no evidence as to the truth or otherwise of his state- ment that he produced proof that he was not a German subject. The fact that he has apparently made a false statement about the circumstances of his arrest may perhaps be taken as indicating
